Wheatland, an 1828 Federal mansion house, was the rural
Lancaster County home of James Buchanan,
America’s 15th President of the United
States (1857-1861). This National Historic
Landmark has been restored to show life
during the years of Buchanan’s occupancy
(1848-1868).
Since 1937, Wheatland has been open to the public as an historic
house museum. Wheatland is widely regarded as one of the best
preserved homes of America’s Presidents.
Wheatland still displays the grandeur of
19th century life. The rooms are elegantly
decorated in Victorian style and illustrate
the luxuries of life during this time
period. Sitting on four acres, the property
contains the Wheatland mansion, carriage
house, and various outbuildings. In
December, special candlelight tours are
given of the home.
